Abstract:
This seminar explores key expectations of postgraduate education in the United States, including academic standards, research culture, faculty interactions, and student responsibilities. It also examines the cultural adjustments international students typically face—such as communication styles, classroom norms, and social integration—and provides practical guidance for navigating academic and cultural transitions successfully. The presenter will share his lifetime experience with the audience in an informal setting.

Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Abu SM Masud is Professor Emeritus of Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, USA. Prior to his 2017 retirement, he held the chair-position of Boeing Global Engineering Professor and associate dean for the college of engineering at Wichita State. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) and subsequently completed his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at Kansas State University. He was honored as the “Boeing Global Engineering Professor,” and over his tenure helped advance WSU’s global partnerships, international collaborations, and experiential learning initiatives for engineering students. In recognition of his contributions to engineering education, he received the “Duane and Velma Wallace Outstanding Educator Award” from WSU’s College of Engineering. He is a Fellow of IISE and of IEOM Society
